Which calculator answers which question?
In Switzerland, pay and taxes sit in different systems: social insurance is regulated federally, income tax cantonally and municipally, and anyone without a C settlement permit pays withholding tax straight off the salary instead of filing a return. Depending on your situation, a different calculator gives the answer:
- “What is left of my salary?” — thesalary calculator itemises AHV, IV, EO, ALV, NBU and BVG line by line.
- “How much tax will I pay in my municipality?” — thecantonal tax comparison computes cantonal, municipal and federal tax for all 26 cantons and links through to each canton's own page.
- “I have just moved here and I am taxed at source.” — thewithholding tax calculator applies the cantonal tariffs by code (A/B/C/H), number of children and church tax; thewithholding tax comparison ranks every canton side by side.
- “Is a pillar 3a contribution worth it?” — thepillar 3a calculator puts the tax saving in francs.
- “Is this hourly rate a fair offer?” — thehourly wage calculator converts in both directions, including vacation compensation and the 13th month salary.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure on this site comes from an official source and is documented with that source and a retrieval date — there is no value on CalcSwiss without a traceable origin:
- Tax tariffs and multipliers: the Federal Tax Administration (FTA) and the cantonal tax administrations. The cantons are responsible for the content of their tariffs.
- Withholding tax tariffs: the cantonal tariff files for the current tax year, broken down by tariff code (A/B/C/H), number of children and church tax.
- Social-security contributions: the rates for AHV/IV/EO, ALV, non-occupational accident insurance and BVG under federal ordinances.
- Municipalities: the BFS number of the Federal Statistical Office as the unique key for each of Switzerland's roughly 2,100 municipalities.
Which file supplies which value, and when it was last checked, is listed individually on thesources page.
How we calculate — and what we deliberately do not
Transparency also means naming the limits. Our tax calculators start from taxable income — the amount after all deductions — and do not determine your deductions for you, because those depend on your personal circumstances. Results are shown excluding church tax and excluding the personal tax levied in some cantons. For withholding tax we cover the ordinary A/B/C/H tariffs; the special tariffs for cross-border commuters from Germany, France and Italy are not reproduced.
All results are indicative figures for your own orientation and are no substitute for tax advice. What is binding is the assessment of the competent tax authority — for withholding tax, your employer's statement. The full calculation logic is documented on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions
Are the calculators free, and do I need an account?
Every calculator is free and works without signing up. No account, no advertising, no cookies. Your entries never leave your browser — the calculation runs locally on your device and we store no salary or tax data.
How accurate are the results?
Tariffs and tax multipliers come from the official FTA data for the current tax year, and the social-security rates from federal ordinances. The results are therefore arithmetically correct but indicative: only the assessment issued by the competent tax authority — or your employer’s payroll statement — is binding.
Which tax year do the figures apply to?
All calculators use 2026 tax-year data. Every data file carries its source and retrieval date; the Sources page shows, value by value, where a figure comes from and when it was last checked.
Do the tax calculators account for my deductions?
No — you enter your taxable income, meaning the amount after all deductions. To see what an additional pillar 3a contribution does to your tax bill, the pillar 3a calculator shows the saving directly in francs.
